Job summary
We are looking for a highly-skilled, experienced, and motivated software engineer to help us in our endeavour to make AWS the best place to operate relational databases. Amazon RDS Performance Insights is a database performance tuning and monitoring feature that helps you quickly assess the load on your database, and determine when and where to take action. Our vision is to expand the scope of key performance and operational insights we deliver to RDS customers. Our service also forms the foundation for DevOps Guru for RDS, a new ML-powered capability that is designed to empower developers and DevOps engineers to quickly detect, diagnose, and remediate a wide variety of database-related issues in Amazon RDS.

This is a rare chance for you to be a part of a highly visible team that is helping to deliver transformative solutions to customers and chart the course for other AWS services to follow.

About You

You will be responsible for developing a product that captures performance insights from RDS instances and delivers them to our customers. This product operates on hundreds of thousands of instances, and helps our customers monitor and tune the performance of their databases through timely and relevant metrics, as well as recommendations.

This is an area that requires solving the hardest engineering challenges in distributed systems at massive scale. As a customer-facing AWS service, our solutions have to be super solid, scalable, efficient, and highly fault tolerant. You will be responsible for all aspects of engineering, including development, testing and deployment of these services. AWS operates large-scale, mission critical workloads, so you need to be comfortable taking ownership of the operational excellence of your service.

Finally, you're excited by the opportunity to learn about and help solve our customers' challenges. In order to break new ground, we'll need to resolve ambiguity and innovate on behalf of our customers. You understand that being passionate about an idea is different than taking it personally, and you believe that debate makes strong ideas even stronger.

About Us

Inclusive Team Culture

Here at AWS, we embrace our differences. We are committed to furthering our culture of inclusion. We have 10 employee-led affinity groups, reaching 40,000 employees in over 190 chapters globally. We have innovative benefit offerings, and host annual and ongoing learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences. Amazon's culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 16 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.

Work/Life Balance

Our team places a high value on work-life balance. It isn't about how many hours you spend at work; it's about taking ownership of your responsibilities at home and at work, and striking the right balance between these two aspects of your life in order to be successful and happy in the long term. As such, we offer flexible working hours, and ample time for vacations and personal days.

This position does involve on-call responsibilities, rotating among all the engineers (i.e. less frequently than once every couple of months). We don't like being paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we continuously work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant, and that root causes of failures are fixed so that we aren't paged for the same issue repeatedly.

Mentorship & Career Growth

Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we're building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects based on what will help each team member develop into a well-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.
